10 Tips For Growing Lavender in your Garden

Below is our best, simple advice for successfully growing lavender (all varieties) in the garden. Note that this advice is based on our experience growing a large variety of lavender in southern Queensland.

  • Position your plants in full sun

  • Ensure they have well-drained soil (lavender does not tolerate clay soils)

  • Prune well at the end of the flowering season

  • Deadhead regularly to encourage growth (we use a hedge trimmer)

  • Give your plants a good dose of seaweed solution twice a year

  • Water well and regularly when first planted

  • Do not allow to sit in water for any length of time after established

  • Lavender will do better if not smothered by other plants in the garden (good airflow around the plant is ideal in Queensland

  • Regularly pick the flowers to encourage growth and further flowering

  • Lightly mulch around your plants with sugarcane mulch or straw
